Awarded in 2008, one year ahead of schedule the Union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) announced to the world that Adelaide was to host the first ever ProTour cycling event to be held outside of Europe.

Making history the 2008 Tour Down Under attracted 548,000 spectators who lined the roads to cheer on the teams, which was a 53.5% increase from the previous year. Now making it Adelaide's largest spectator attended event.
